Dr Elmien Bronkhorst

Clinical pharmacist and Senior Lecturer at the Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University (SMU), School of Pharmacy.

Elmien Bronkhorst is a clinical pharmacist and senior lecturer at the Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University (SMU) where she is the Head of department of the department of clinical pharmacy, with the aim of training new clinical pharmacists. Elmien obtained her B.Pharm degree from North West University in 1995 and a MSc(Med) in clinical pharmacy from University of Limpopo, Medunsa Campus in 2012. Elmien graduated in 2019 with her PhD in pharmacy, from the Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University. Her topic was the “Practice of Clinical Pharmacy in South Africa.” She also has a keen interest in the areas of critical care medicine and antimicrobial stewardship and recently antiretroviral stewardship. Elmien has vast experience hospital pharmacy where she practiced for 18 years, the last couple of years as a clinical pharmacist, part of the multidisciplinary team. She joined the department of clinical pharmacy at SMU in 2014 as a lecturer. Since then, she has published 24 papers in International and National peer reviewed journals, and 14 papers in non-peer-reviewed journals. She also presented at various conferences and workshops. Nineteen Master’s degree students graduated under her supervision. Elmien is also part of the National Executive committee of the South African Society of Clinical Pharmacy (SASOCP), where she acts as the Vice-chairperson.
